ARTISTS OF THE FUTURE: SEVEN ARTISTS TO WATCH

Our new artists are bringing a wave of modernity to DegreeArt.com without compromise; mixing the kitsch with the unnerving. In many of their works, we find ourselves delving into their emotions and personal experiences. It is no easy task breaking into the art world, yet these innovators, makers and painters seem to be getting it spot on, this is the chance to really Invest in the Artists of the Future.

New contemporary artists include: Harriet Horton, Bakhtiyar Berkin, Anna Green, Kennis Chan, Lucy Devenish, Merna Liddawi and Anna Masters.

Bakhtiyar Berkin, a Camberwell graduate from this year and Pulp Fiction fan shows his true colours through the contrast of terrifyingly stark imagery with block saturated colours. The artist's inspiration comes from pop culture and the surreal hallucinations he experienced during episodes of sleep paralysis as a child. However, all is open to interpretation in this exciting body of work.

Harriet Horton is equally displaying such extremities. Juxtaposing neon lights, which hold many trashy connotations yet in this instance, provide a harmonious balance for the peaceful taxidermy. It is the animals potential to dream which Harriet aims to explore in her ongoing series ‘Sleep Subjects.’

Kennis Chan is an abstract artist whereby “less is more.” Opposite forms come together to create an ambiguous notion on abstraction; are these paintings simple or complex? Each painting forms disparate textures, colours and most of all composition allowing them to sit bravely as a collection as much as they do alone.

On an initial viewing of recent graduate Lucy Devenish prints, we find peace and tranquillity. Yet in order to reach this state Lucy must pace herself through torrid times swimming the British coastlines at severity. ‘A Line in the Water’ shows an exploration of memory, all of which come to fade, overlap and fabricate with one another, correspondingly with the waves of the sea.

Training to be an Art Therapist, Anna Green presents to us the mundane movements we carry out in our daily tasks, which to each individual are of great importance. Getting from one place to the next involves a sense of purpose and emotions that drive Anna to study the human form and movement.

Another 2015 Fine Art graduate is Merna Liddawi. Growing up in Jordan is where she was first drawn to elements of the universe, which now make an ongoing appearance in her work. Working with a deeply complex method using Tempura and gold leaf Liddawi makes a point of stating that her imagery must therefore remain highly simplistic.

The current exhibition at the V&A ‘What is Luxury’ is where our final contemporary artist comes under question. A subjective question of course, yet the answer that resonates with all, is that luxury lies in every detail. Every single detail in Anna Master’s deeply captivating butterfly installations celebrates her mastery of precision and demonstrates Anna’s dedication to beautiful form.

These seven contemporary artists are creating truly, innovative works. At DegreeArt.com we remain eager to promote the most accessible and affordable innovators of our time. For sales enquiries please contact Isobel@DegreeArt.com
