Reclaiming The Culture, seven men dressed in traditional attire stand at the top of the stairs of the Chambre de Commerce. Hands on waists and looking down on at the colonisers dressed in all-Black suits. Taking with them ornamental artifacts of the colonial administration, the busts of statues and a briefcase, 'sons of the people, are leading the people, on the people's behalf'. Reinforcing the idea of total independence achieved through the reclamation of The Culture (symbolically depicted by the African attire). They state 'Independence is complete, long live Africanity!'. The colour palette of the attire is a mix of bright yellow, pink and blue. Colours that challenge the perception of masculinity taking place in the painting. The painting is based on a project on the liberation struggle in Africa and the scars that colonialism left behind as the newly Black bourgeois rise after independence. This body of work is inspired by the film, Xala by Ousmane Sembene.
