Hynek Martinec was born on November 12, 1980 in the Czech Republic. At the age of 11 he won the first prize in the Náchod City regional drawing competition. Consequently, he started to study drawing more systematically. His teachers were the academic painters Mr. Rocman and Mr. Ducháč. He studied design at a secondary arts school in Uherské Hradiště for one year and at the Václav Hollar Arts School in Prague for three years. He passed the entrance examination to the Academy of Fine Art (AVU) in Prague one year before graduating from the secondary school, ahead of other students.
In 2005 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Prague, Studio of Traditional Painting (Prof. Zdeněk Beran). As a part of his study at the Academy he spent one semester in 2002 at Middlesex University in London, and one semester in 2004 at The Cooper Union (fine art) in New York. In 2003, he won the Studio Prize (Ateliérová cena AVU) awarded by the Academy of Fine Art in Prague. In 2004, he was chosen by the Academy´s professors in Prague as the Best Student of the Year. His works are a part of private collections in Vienna, Miami, Prague (National Gallery), London (British Museum - Department prints and drawings), New York.
