Artist Statement:

Painting interests me in a fundamental way. It is direct, it taps into the nerves with visceral power whilst purring at the intellect. For me it's material form is inherently aesthetically interesting. One can play with it's abstraction whilst wielding it into objective depictions. Simultaneously exploiting the physical fact with the illusionary realm of representational imagery. Including 3 dimensions to the alchemical mix has been an exciting inquiry for me. Although I have employed different media in my work painting is central to the investigations. I have worked from life, photographs and allowed the given material to sway the expression. My surroundings often enter my work, currently I am making work about cleaning in Swansea Grand Theatre, my current job -partly as a way to cope with it. Other visual discourses I’ve undertaken include my father’s illness, self-portraiture as still-life and the duality of combining figural ideas with abstraction using 2 and 3 dimensions. I find breaking down my work and regurgitating it into new configurations mentally cleansing. I place these artefacts into my installations but do not imbue them with complete sets of meaning. Instead it is the final installation of the assemblages, and the ways in which they interact with one another, that denotes their significance.
