The exhibition will be formally opened by the Icelandic Embassy
First Thursday: 5th March 2009 6-9pm
Icelandic photographer Maria Kjartansdottir presents her first UK solo at the DegreeArt.com Gallery, Vyner Street London.
Winner of the prestigious Reykjavík  project-award from Myndstef and the Penninn prize in 2007 Maria has recently returned from Granada in Spain where she has been living within the regions caves unprecedentedly documenting the elusive community that inhabits them.
As much an explorer as photographer, Maria’s fascination and obsession with life cycles and events, across cultures, dominate the subject matter of her pieces and drives her to visit often remote and unusual locations.
The results are bewitching insights and stories that present the viewer with a captivating sense of discovery, honesty and empathy for her subjects.
Maria´s recent exhibitions include: Berlin New Live festival, Berlin, New York. Nordic moods - contemporary landscape photography, Arken Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen.  Further More, Tramway, Glasgow.  De andere Kunstbeurs, Westergasfabriken, Amsterdam and  Menier Gallerie-Chocolate factory, London.
28 year old Maria graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2007 with a M.F.A. She lives and works in London with her partner and 7 year old daughter Hera.
The exhibition is kindly supported by the Danish and Icelandic embassies in London and will be included in the EAST festival, encouraging Londoners and visitors to the capital to explore the vibrant cultural life of East London.  EAST is a unique collaboration between the Mayor of London and key cultural organisations in London.
