DegreeArt.com Presents Kate Marshall’s 2008 Solo Show
at the Empire Gallery, London

Raunch culture and feminist icons collide in Kate Marshall’s paint-sketches at her 2008 solo show Blue Stockings.

Kate Marshall returns to London after her 2007 solo debut was singled out as a must-see by the Sunday Times.  Her signature figures in acrylic and charcoal “flirt between painting and drawing” and feature alongside work that shows a new bent for printmaking.

Bra-burning strip artists, suffragette jockeys and voyeuristic glances through the glass ceiling offer a “smutty, seaside postcard humour” take on feminism, femininity and the sexualized female image in popular culture.  Her inspiration comes from images of women “culled from a glossy magazine, a fairy tale, historic art and literature, trash culture, ancient myth and coffee table erotica.”

Born in the UK in 1982, Kate Marshall lives and works in Devon.  After completing a foundation course in Art and Design at Falmouth College she graduated from Goldsmiths in 2004 with a BA in Fine Art and Art History.  In 2006 she was selected for the Noise Festival, a national showcase for emerging creative talent judged by Stella Vine.  Live art performances often feature in her shows; most recently at the 2006 Liverpool Biennial, which received coverage on BBC2 and her debut London solo exhibition in 2007, which was singled out by The Sunday Times as a must-see.  In the last six months she has exhibited in Florence and New York and plans to make a return to the USA next year.
