INTRODUCING BANKSIDE X CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIVE NEW ARTIST IN RESIDENCE | ROD MCINTOSH

From November to January, Artist Rod McIntosh will bring mindfulness and ink inspired painting to Bankside Hotel’s Artist Studio Space

8th November 2019

We are delighted to announce that our next 'Maker in Residence' in partnership with the Bankside Hotel, is accomplished artist Rod McIntosh.

Rod McIntosh is a British artist who utilizes ink to create marks inspired by mindfulness and meditation, along with the tradition of drawing. Concentrating on the body, the breath, materials, and repetitive processes, McIntosh emphasizes the present moment through the observation and recording of the moment of creation within a continuum. McIntosh describes these works as “physical meditations, that offers himself, and the viewer a moment to pause.” With a background in figurative sculpture and Arts Management, McIntosh is currently a full-time artist working between Kent and London, expanding on his national and international profile.

McIntosh’s mark-making process reveals a fluidity and honesty that is portrayed through a muted pallet of monotonous, lending the work a striking and minimal approach that coalesces with the quiet sensitivity to his materials, time invested and action. Following the traditional eastern recipes for archival inks and pastes, McIntosh works on delicate Chinese papers that absorb each fluid movement and carefully develop into a final stroke. This process serves as an embodiment of a gestural flow synchronized to the breath, which is privately performed by the artist and exhibited in the final works.

During his residency, McIntosh will illuminate presence and concentration as key elements to cultivating a meditative quality in his painting process. Continuing his experimentation with temporal gestures, alongside ideas of permanence, attachment, and acceptance, the artist will portray a unique relationship between ink and mindfulness. Adopting Bankside’s Makers’ Space l as a full-time artist studio throughout the course of his residency, McIntosh will offer a variety of opportunities further investigating mindfulness and painting as a joint experience. Featured events include weekly morning mindfulness sitting groups, mindfulness painting and ink technique workshops, and an all-day conference dedicated to ink as an art form. Additionally, McIntosh will celebrate the holiday season transforming the Makers’ Studio into a festive studio window installation. McIntosh’s residency will conclude with an opportunity for friends, family, and community members to meet the artist and celebrate the importance of being present.
