Aliyah, Snapshot Oil paint, graphite and image transfers on circular board. 70cm in diameter. In this second portrait of Aliyah I wanted to play around with the idea of “the viewer” within both photography and portraiture. The portrait is designed to be reflection of Aliyahs' life and transition from Childhood to adulthood and the change in agency that also occurs. This is reflected in the transition of images imbedded within this portrait. The images are a combination of photos taken of Aliyah when she was growing up to photos taken by her when she was older. The polaroid camera she rests her hand on is a metaphor for the idea of agency and individual identity. When we are younger identity is often something that is thrust upon us by others and it is only in time and the gaining of experiences that we can begin to construct our own sense of personal identity. This is something that myself and Aliyah have often discussed and became an integral theme within this portrait. Despite her eyes being averted within the painting, the pose ensures that she still has a sense of control over the viewer, she is very much aware that people may be looking, yet remains unfazed. This gives her the power within the composition. Limited Edition Print
