This portrait is a part of the Ancestral Foundations series. This project aims to explore the impact that African ancestry plays on our sense of identity, especially for those growing up in countries with a history of colonialism and prejudice. It looks to question the effects that this has had on many of us who have grown up in the UK and America with African families or mixed backgrounds. How does this mix of vastly different cultures and perspectives influence our lives and sense of identity? This second portrait of Josh was created in response to our conversations about his family history. Josh recounts the experiences of his Grandparents settling in the UK as a part of the Windrush generation. Surrounding Josh to varying degrees of visibility are images from his family photo albums. These image transfers show the generations of his family from images of his grandparents, to parents and finally to the more visible images relating to the memories of his upbringing in Bath.
