‘Aporia 1’ is part of a series of six paintings created while studying for an MFA Fine Art degree at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee. The figure pictured is isolated and with an insular gaze to embody the enduring relevance of the body as an image. This painting was made in an attempt to consider how, as an artist working with traditional subject matter, in a traditional medium, I can make work that is relevant to contemporary culture. Consequently, ‘Aporia 1’ is deeply inspired by Giorgio Agamben’s writings on what it is to be contemporary. Especially, Agamben’s notion that true contemporaneity can only be achieved by refusing to commit to our time and its demands fully. The bright red of the hands and ambiguous tone of the work are intended to reflect the contradictory nature of Agamben’s contemporary condition.
