We are delighted to showcase Claire Luxton's work at Contemporary Space in Cambridge Rhode Island as part of the touring exhibition of Avalon.
Contemporary Collective artist Claire Luxton. ‘Avalon’ seeks to explore the notions of submersion and suspension, further examining the powerful themes within the realms of the sublime. Luxton will work site-specifically to radically transform the gallery space, seeking to suspend the viewer in an immersive environment. Through the juxtaposition of space, physicality and materiality, ‘Avalon’ will aim to elevate and heighten the viewers’ experience of the work by focusing on the nuances of transformation and aesthetics. “My practice has always drawn me toward the exploration of water and the sea; this combined with my desire to investigate romanticised notions of the sublime has led me to take inspiration from the legendary island ‘Avalon’.
“Avalon is an inner place a space, a temenos” (Palden Jenkins) Furthermore, historical and cultural research, combined with my desire to explore the sublime, consistently informs my practice and the emotional and physical way in which I interact with my work. For me ‘Avalon’ is crucially a coming together of not only my process and research, but the creation of a physical realm in which the viewer can be fully immersed in, to explore the notions of a more abstract nature.“
