Affordable Art Fair Hampstead 2023 | Meet the Artists pt.2

We are delighted to announce that we will be returning to the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead in partnership with Paint My Home by Bell and Sofa.com, bringing an array of artwork to suit all tastes!

As part of the countdown to AAF Hampstead 2023, we asked our artists a few questions about what they're excited to show for this Summer's fair...

Kelly Jenkins

1) Which piece/pieces are you most excited to exhibit at the Hampstead Fair?

I am excited to show the public my news pieces; Trustfall and the Cloudscape series at Hampstead AAF this year. These are brand new pieces for 2023 and they pack a punch of full colour and energy. They’re perfect for their Spring debut.

2) What is the most common question you receive about your work and how do you answer it?

Are these really stitched? YES they are. I use hand and machine embroidery techniques to stitch directly into my paintings. I love the tactility the embroidery adds and the fresh dimension it creates within each piece.

3) What is the most surprising question you've ever been asked and how did you answer it?

Most surprising question? Haven’t had one... not yet at least but maybe that’ll change at Hampstead AFF this year.

1) Which piece/pieces are you most excited to exhibit at the Hampstead Fair?

I'm most excited to exhibit my latest still life pieces. I'm really enjoying working on them. I try and get a nice balance between abstract marks, stencils and drawings. It's fun to try and bring the 'dated' subject into a contemporary style.

2) What is the most common question you receive about your work and how do you answer it?

It tends to be 'how long does it take you to paint one'... in general it'll be around 3 to 4 weeks but I tend to flitter between a few pieces at a time.  So whilst one section is drying I'll progress with another. I like working this way as it breaks up the painters block and keeps things fresh!

3) What is the most surprising question you've ever been asked and how did you answer it?

Ah I actually can’t think of anything too weird/strange! I love it when I'm chatting to people and they just completely get the artwork and what I'm trying to convey, it's so nice!

Lana Matsuyama

1) Which piece/pieces are you most excited to exhibit at the Hampstead Fair?

This pair, consisting of 'Formcape no. 31' and 'Formscape no. 32', is quite special because it further explores texture as the main focus. Since I've kept the color palette to mostly one colour (ultramarine blue), the different textures really stand out and become exaggerated.

2) What is the most common question you receive about your work and how do you answer it?

The most common question I receive about my work is likely about how I create texture and dimensionality in my paintings. I use a mixture of different paint mediums such as pumice gel and pastes, as well as materials such as plaster, sand and earth.

3) What is the most surprising question you've ever been asked and how did you answer it?

That's a hard one. I always encourage and welcome any questions that come my way, regardless of whether it's based on the work, my inspiration, my experience, my background, or anything personal. So...ask away! ;)
