Meet the Artist | Interview with Nain Tara

Having had an interest in arts since she was a kid, Nain Tara pursued arts at the National College of Arts, as it is one of the oldest and most renowned art colleges of the sub continent. Her work and ideas are mostly executed on canvases and her style of work is very experimental. Because she loves experiments, these little ventures take an astric form eventually. As time has progressed, she has been doing commissioned artworks for individuals and freelancing her way through it. After her display of the Thesis Degree Show at the National College of Arts, she did an exhibition in virtual and physical form which debuted both national and internationally.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?
 
Abstract Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism undoubtedly influenced my painting style in some way. It makes my painting carefree.
 
2) Where do you go and when to make your best art? 
 
Most of the time I don’t go anywhere but for inspiration I like to draw and paint with kids. 
 
3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?
 
I like to explore and experiment with mix different materials and combine them with classical painting techniques. I use acrylic, oil, pastels,spray paint and other found objects to give life to my creations.
 
4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?
 
There are so many! Mark Rothko, Zarina Hasmi, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and contemporary artist Igor Dobrowolski.
 
5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?
 
I've never really thought about this as I've wanted to be an artist since I was a child.
 
 
6) What do you listen to for inspiration?
 
Instead of music I like to listen to political intervies, podcast conversations or any informative documentary.
7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?
 
Mark Rothko’s, Untitled (Red and Burgundy Over Blue), 1969.
 
8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?
 
Tate Modern.
 
9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?
 
Just be yourself. Make what you want to make and take artist criticism positively. Not every body is going to like your work and that's ok.
 
 
10) What is your favourite book of all time (fiction or non fiction)?
 
Nuskha Haye Wafa's Poetry Book by Punjabi.
 
11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non traditional art setting, where would it be?
 
The sides of a road, installed on a billboad. 
 
12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?
 
Taking criticisim positivly.
 
13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?
 
Doing exhibitions around the world and engaging in art curations.
