MEET THE ARTIST: Victoria Valcheva Influenced by the political and cultural dynamics

Victoria Valcheva is interested in theatre performance and one's understanding of the 'self' and identity in current political epistemic. Valcheva uses oil paints on canvas as well as making moving imagery and performance art. 

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?
Surrealism

2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?
I love travelling to Bulgaria and am influenced by the political as well as cultural dynamics in the country today.

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?
My inspiration often derives from a collection of my analogues. These images then help me locate personal interests which they are transferred into paintings or performance pieces.

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?
Frida Kahlo


5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?
I'd be an actor/ director or maybe a neurologist

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?
James Blake, Nirvana, Yellow Days, Kate Tempest

7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?
Peter Doig- Milky Way

8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?
Victoria Miro


9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?

Speak your truth.

10) What is your favourite book of all time (fiction or non-fiction)?
I love Sarah Kane's plays. In particular Psychosis 4.48.

11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non-traditional art setting, where would that be?
Buzludzha monument

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?
Saint Martins thought me to be self-motivated and always on the look for inspiration.

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?
Ideally, I'd see myself running my own creative space as well as continuing my work in performance art, filmmaking and painting.
