This painting is made only with white and raw umber oils. The image depicts a boy soldier in Afghanistan. The work is part of a series using monochromatic palettes. This series uses found photographs as source imagery. The photographs come from news stories and other places on the internet, including wiki commons. Although my works are almost photorealistic, I allow the image to appear broken and semi abstract in some places. I am inspired by Gerhard Richter’s works which appear to be photorealistic, but on closer inspection begin to break up and melt. I am also inspired by the impressionists of the 19th century. My ‘melting’ brushwork joins an enquiry in which I question the power of a photograph as truth. I wanted to create the sense that the information we receive comes through a filter and that journalistic photographs are selectively taken, so can only offer a visual fragment of the full truth.
