Kana Waiwaiku
Multi-disciplinary artist Kana Waiwaiku attended the prestigious Central St Martins College, London.
His art practice incorporates painting, photography, sculpture, film & hand-stitched works made of fabric to produce evocative & emotive meditations on themes of a personal nature. He is purposefully an existential, autobiographical, even confessional artist who tries to understand the world through his experiences.
Grounded in a belief that art can be transmutative & cathartic, he began ambitiously striving to use his work to convey emotional & spiritual undertones.
The resulting work is transformative rather than descriptive, created through reflecting on lived experiences, emotions & memories. The intent is to form a place where one can go for self-examination & yet peacefully behind the art remains the exorcism of childhood traumas, depression, fear of abandonment & constant upheaval.
Favouring an immersive approach to working the quiet beauty produced is inseparable from this approach. Patient & profoundly thoughtful, he is an artist who constantly confronts our mortality & our vulnerabilities through his work.
Awards include the Getty Images Creative Bursary for his body of work on mental health: “A Sonic Space Where Beauty & Chaos Collide”.
