Oil, graphite and image transfers on circular board. This portrait of my Uncle is the latest in the series “I have more souls than one”. This series is an exploration into the impact of African diasporic and transcultural experiences and how this is felt through the different generations of family. This portrait of my Uncle is one of two circular pieces depicting him and his son Vic Mensa. They are intended to play off one another, offering alternative perspectives of my Uncle who has navigated the transition from Ghana to the US and his son has often looked to re-connect to his Ghanaian ancestry. Within this painting, my Uncle Edward is surrounded by both imagery of his family and upbringing in Ghana along with images of his family and now adult children who were all born and raised in Chicago. There is a level of contentment in the pose as he reflects on his experiences and successes of acclimatising to a new country and culture as he now sees the city of Chicago as his home. The images of his past is Ghana are fairly hidden amongst the backdrop as a sign of the passing of time and distancing of memory. That is with the exception of an image of his younger brother which can be found within the glasses he is clutching. Although Ghana might no longer be his home, family ensures that his connection will always remain.
