This painting explores the novel 'The Master And Margharita' The scene depicted is a composite of different parts of the novel but brings them all together through the string pulling enticement and theatrical showmanship of the lamp lit figure, Woland. Woland is the devil himself, visiting Moscow on the first full moon of spring, part puppeteer of various inhabitants of the city and part destroyer of their acceptance and conviction in the existing atheistic socialist order, he induces grand hallucinations of biblical events and controls destinies throughout various courses in the novel. Moonlighting as a professional black magician and hypnotist with some hellish companions that include a large anthropomorphic gun toting black cat, he performs an extraordinary magic show at the Moscow Theatre which climaxes in the severing and reattachment of the head of the venues seemingly unharmed master of ceremonies, and the mass hypnotism of audience members who leave the theatre naked and in hysterics.
