Sam King’s practice explores diverse issues such as transhumanism, masculinity and subjectivity in the digital age, as well as the utopian and dystopian potentialities of technological progress.

Technically he combines traditional and ‘virtual’ registers of paint to obscure the boundary between organic and technologized life, to question the dispersion of our identities between physical and digital realms.

Juxtaposing chiaroscuro techniques inspired by the Old Masters with smooth fades reminiscent of the digital screen as well as distortions and repetitions of the figure, my works traverse the boundary between the embodied and the simulated.

Sam King (1995) is a British artist, living and working in London. His artistic career began through his involvement with street art. Upon graduating school, he travelled to Australia and Asia for one year, where a number of his mural works were featured in publications including Inside Street Art Melbourne and Street Art Australia.

On his return to the U.K, he studied Fine Art at The Art Academy London, where he developed his oil painting skills and conceptual basis. Following this, he received The Jorge-Aguilar Artist Award and The Liberty Art Award (2018).

Sam has completed artist residencies at PADA, Portugal, 2020, Art House Holland, Holland, 2019, AucArt, London, 2019, and Jardin Orange Artist Residency, China 2017. Recent exhibitions include Rea Fair, Pulp The Florence Trust and London Design Week (2021), Time and Space, (2020), The Old School Gallery, Leiden, The End is Nigh, The Library, London, Secret Art Show, Milan (2019).

Recently, he has been published in Flux review, and ‘Both Sides of Here’, a curatorial project from the Courtauld institute.
