Portrait of Coo Shibasaki in my new workshop. "Coo went to the hairdresser this morning. She wanted a change. She has chosen a half-long haircut, square gradient that fits perfectly with her rounded face. She brought me the strands of her cut hair and gave them to me in a box she had prepared. It is, it seems, the sign of a sincere gift of self, simple, total, terrifying, a gift from human to human, as vital as giving your sperm or blood. I have been unwise to accept them. Good ! I am very happy to have been here today”. (Extract from my workshop diary of Monday, July 29, 1974, p. 98). Amber paint on canvas mounted on panel. Varnished and ready to hang. Signature on back.
