The George Tavern has been a constant on East London's Commercial Rd for over 700 years. On the main road between the city and the docks, everyone has drunk and been drunk at this pub. Geoffery Chaucer, Samuel Pepys, Charles Dickens, Kate Moss. Everyone. Even me on occasion when I used to live round the corner. Now, let's get to business. The bathroom in this place is unbelievable. Firstly it smells like my old school and has the same doors. Secondly, this place is messed up. I have never seen more graffiti in my life. But not graffiti in the modern 'tagging' sense, graffiti in the '70s away end' sense. Every inch has been covered with some witty insight. The entire bathroom is a work of art. It's a living installation, constantly evolving with new witticisms, retorts and put-downs. When you think about the sheer amount of time these walls have been here, the souls that have passed through, there aren't many places on earth like it. My dream is to present the entire room as a lifesize print. Bring this world into your world. It's such a special place and is probably one of my most taken spaces, its ever-changing walls are a constant on my mind, and I feel obliged to capture it. So here is a snapshot of this ever-changing canvas as it was in July 2020, the first day it opened after lockdown 1 | The Hand Dryer series is a continuation of the project that led to my first published book 'Hand Dryers'.
