Legacy is a central part on the ongoing “I have more souls than one “ series. It captures a moment from my childhood as my Father carries me in his arms. The central image that inspired this work was a photo taken during a family seaside holiday in England with my Mum’s side of the family. In many ways it marks the mergence between my Father and my Mother’s families as they embarked on their life together raising a family in the UK. Surrounding my Father in the background are ghostly and obscured image transfers capturing moments between the two sides of the family meeting, as my Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles visited Ghana and the UK respectively for the first time. This paintings is a representation of a mergence between Ghanaian and English cultures creating new legacies and future generations. An idea which has been at the heart of the “I have more souls than one” series of work. The painting of myself as a child at the centre of the composition encapsulates this. I am a product of all of these moments, memories and colliding cultures. An image of my Mother resides in the teddy that I am clutching, a symbol of the endless love and support she has given me throughout my life.
