Estella Castle makes paintings which focus on a variety of historical and contemporary references from Rococco to Americana. Drawing on a background of life in New Zealand and the United States, she uses a seemingly subdued style in which figures or places are edited to create a new composition in which the familiar and unfamilar are hard to disentangle. She is interested in reconsidering both the stereotypical views of the rural idyll and the role of celebrity in engaging with the viewer.
