Countless faces. Infinite eyes. Walking past. Unnoticed.
The title for Johan Andersson’s debut solo show ‘Prophecy’, from the Greek ‘prophetia’ defines the belief that divine inspiration can stir revelations.
The subjects of Johan’s paintings are people, or more precisely faces which the artist uses to honour the individual by offering a window into the sitter’s personality, emotions and spirituality.
The figures are taken beyond the boundaries of conventional beauty seeking to question our preconceived ideals through the magnification of unusual features and unashamed honesty.
We become transfixed by their haunting eyes, their courage amidst paralysis, all set against a backdrop of hope. Prophecy offers the viewer the rare opportunity to encounter characters bearing their complete souls.
His unique and accomplished style has attracted the attention of the art world seeing Johan win the Jerwood Contemporary Painters' Prize in 2008 and in 2007 being the youngest artist ever to be included in the top three on the BP Portrait Award shortlist. Since graduation Johan has exhibited widely and has laid the foundations of an extremely successful career.
