Materials:

The piece is made with acrylic on aluminum composite panels, using a combination of fluid acrylics and gloss pouring medium to build up a glossy texture. It consists of two panels, each measuring 122 x 122 cm. For a seamless display, the panels can be installed flat against the wall using mirror clips.

This painting combines architectural and natural elements from Kenya and Tanzania, highlighting the contrast between Nairobi’s bustling cityscape and the serenity of the savanna. The GTC Building, surrounding structures, and expressway stand alongside Mount Kilimanjaro and acacia trees, merging urban development with the natural world. A warm sunset in shades of yellow and orange fills the sky, while deep blacks, blues, reds, and greens bring depth to the trees, ground, and architecture. Blending urban and natural worlds, Shackleton’s work encourages reflection on the connection between cities and the environment. Her style merges contemporary drip painting with imaginative realism—she applies paint using squeeze bottles, then manipulates the drips with water spritzers and surface rotation. By embracing gravity, this technique creates both organic, free-flowing forms that echo nature and sharp, precise lines that reflect the built environment.
