A richly textured oil painting of a single boat at low tide. At the point of completion of the piece, the tide had begun to re-enter the harbour causing me to work with more energy and speed. Please note that this is an authentic plein air painting, executed directly outdoors in the open air. I adore working from observation and dedicate most of my working hourse to the study of nature. Some of the key characteristics of this genre of painting may include: grit, sand and even flies stuck to the surface of the painting paint smears on the reverse of the canvas/panel Scratch marks from wheat crops, brambles, twigs and branches as the piece is transported home extrememly lively brush strokes and bold colour During my plein air painting trips I often make anumerous paintings to be transported home. A method I've developed over the years is to insert drawing pins into the surface (usually the 4 corners of the wet painting). This allows me to stack numerous paintings together without the risk of the paintings sticking to one another. The result of this method is that you may find several tiny pin holes, this is not damage but simply part of my process as a plein air painter. I've found that this method of transportation creates minimal impact on the piece in comparison to wet panel carriers, in which a 5mm wide 'smudge' is made on two sides of the work.
