Ellie Young
I am interested in representative painting in relation to time, the nature of the film still as a frozen moment captured and extended or the portrait sitting for an hour, each moment counting as a mark on the page. I feel that painting can measure an expansion or contraction of time and that the attempt to portray something real using paint and brushes can result in images that can be both amusing and captivating.
My artistic influences cover a broad spectrum from Titian to David Shrigley but my favourite painter is Pierre Bonnard. I am moved by the way his paintings both guide and disconcert the viewer, as though glimpsing an instant through the artists eyes, and excited by his shimmering use of colour. I am currently experimenting with heightened colours reminiscent of fauvist painters.
