My artwork explores themes of beauty of absence, loss and memory. As a rapidly changing city dweller, we are made easy to become inseparable from the speed of places. I realise an insatiable urgency to reveal…something; remains, lacunae, vestiges, scars, clue, the barely discernible.
“Trace” is usually what is left behind or rooted in the original. Yet it is, in fact, already an individual and enclosed notion. It may be a mere trajectory of the extensive and ambiguous reality; however, “trace” functions as a key to our perception, and further, the whole. In the process of becoming or recognising something, “Trace” comes before completion. And even the notion of completion heavily relies on our perception value. The images in our heads are combined with our emotions of each moment. These two elements cannot be separated: we collect correspondent images that match with our feelings in the moment, and later, we visualise the feelings with that memory. This subjective nature only emphasises the indispensible synthesis and duality between trace and reality.
I practice in the tension between what I see and what I allow myself to see with the recognition sequence. My artistic endeavour is a dialogue between conceptuality and materiality and the surfacing of the obscured and indeterminate is an embrace of uncertainty and anxiety.
