To celebrate the launch of the new art collection, our co-founder Elinor Olisa sat down with Rhiannon Smith, senior marketing manager at sofa.com, to chat all about choosing art, and how to create your very own art collection. Elinor also took a further look into the importance of art in the home, and how and why art fills us with joy!

There’s no doubt that treating yourself to new things is a real pleasure, and this is no different when it comes to buying art. Whether you’re browsing large paintings upon canvas, small framed prints, or trinkets and accessories, the element of bringing something new that you love into your home is something that fills us with joy.

But why does art bring us such joy and happiness? This is something that Behavioural Psychologist Antoinette Raymond (PHD) has looked into in more detail, and discovered that there are three ways in which art brings us happiness.

Firstly, seeing art makes us happy! Looking at art has the ability to evoke numerous emotions from us, whether it’s instilling a sense of calmness, or injecting an element of joy, the act of viewing art increases the levels of dopamine in the brain, increasing feelings of pleasure.

Secondly, creating art also brings us joy! The creativity and process of creating a masterpiece brings joy to artists all over the world, but also reduces stress levels, improves wellbeing, induces relaxation, and has many other health benefits.

Thirdly, owning art brings another element of pleasure to us. When you find that piece of art that you have been searching for, you’re investing in your interiors, as well as your happiness. Each time you see the art in your home, you will feel that boost of well-being too. Not only that, but you are also investing in the artist, allowing them to continue doing what they love.
