INTRODUCING BANKSIDE X CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIVE’S NEW ARTIST IN RESIDENCE | OTTELIEN HUCKIN

From January to March, Artist Ottelien Huckin will bring a modern and sensual approach to classical figure drawing to Bankside Hotel’s Artist Studio Space.

8th January 2020

We are delighted to announce that in partnership with the Bankside Hotel our next 'Maker in Residence' is accomplished artist Ottelien HuckinEdinburgh College of Arts graduate and Signature Art Prize finalist Ottelien Huckin is a Bath and London based artist whose practice aims to capture the qualities of a preparatory sketch though modernized, intimate figure drawings. Contemplating the question of what it means to inhabit one’s own body, Huckin strives to reveal the nude in an autonomous, empowered and sensualized way that reinterprets old master drawings and interacts with the artist’s personal observations and intuition.

Challenging the long historical discourse dictated by ‘the male gaze’, the artist’s drawings portray personal and authentic expression, drawing inspiration from the immediacy of an encounter or in the fragility of a memory. Huckin’s process involves drawing directly onto canvas with oil bar, mimicking the staining nature of charcoal traditionally used in the academic style of figure drawing. The artist utilises bold colour pigments to reject the ideas of classical draughtsmanship, questioning the hierarchy of painting by raising the status of the preparatory drawing to canvas. Huckin describes this candid  process as “powerful, sensual, painful, vulnerable, and joyful.”

During her residency Huckin will expand upon the theme of Illustration and The Avant Garde, creating works based on the exploration and examination of the human figure. Utilizing familiar techniques and processes in addition to branching out with the incorporation of additional colour and dimension, the artist will continue to challenge the traditional norms of classical figure drawing and offer visitors a fresh perspective on this process.

Adopting Bankside’s Makers’ space, Huckin will continue to deepen her practice and experience as an emerging artist. Featured events include a live figure drawing workshop, an artist inspired three course dinner at Bankside’s ArtYard, and a “meet the artist” evening. Additionally, coinciding with Men’s Fashion Week, Huckin will join 14 other artists to sketch a live presentation by an emerging womenswear brand hosted by Contemporary Collective x Bankside.
