Chris Poulton is a Devon-based multimedia artist working in various mediums including painting, sculpture, installation and illustration. With a past of working as a lecturer specialising in sculpture at City & Guilds in London, Chris is currently a member of the London Group of Artists and the Royal Society of Sculptors. In 2013 completed an artist residency at the British Liver Trust based in London and in 2014 was commissioned by the NHS to illustrate its Heart Manual which was launched in the same year.
1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?
Contemporary Art
2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?
In my garden studio, usually around 11 am until dark.
3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?
Usually focused.
4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?
David Salle
5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?
Photojournalism
6) What do you listen to for inspiration?
I love classical music in general, but don't have a particular genre I listen to for inspiration.
7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?
Edward Hopper's 'Night Hawk'
8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), London.
9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?
Focus, work hard and read as much as you can.
10) What is your favourite book of all time (fiction or non fiction)?
'Camera Lucida', by the Roland Barthes.
11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non-traditional art setting, where would that be?
In an atrium of a corporate building.
12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?
You're never too old to learn!
13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?
Hopefully, still making art.
