"'Grandmother' captures the quiet weight of loneliness. The black background symbolizes the emptiness that often surrounds the social lives of many older individuals, particularly women. It reflects a fear of reaching for light, resulting in a quiet surrender to the darkness of life. For some, it takes the support of others to break free from this isolation, but such help is often absent. I hope this painting will be displayed alongside other portraits in an exhibition, to raise awareness and address the issue of loneliness- in this case by her physically being surrounded by other portraits & people. The piece was created using oil paints, built up in multiple layers, each adding depth and complexity. Choosing the background was a challenge—black initially seemed like the obvious choice, but it ultimately proved to be the most powerful way to convey the feelings of emptiness and isolation. After completing the painting, I scanned it into the computer, experimenting with different ideas and compositions to refine the final concept into its current form."
