While the area around Hackney Road has experienced extensive gentrification, there remains a substantial area which is still awaiting redevelopment. As part of the Lake Island residency join local archaeologist Dr James Lattin for an entertaining and enlightening tour of the Hackney Road, in which he will reveal the history behind forgotten buildings and the surprising stories behind some familiar streets. He will also recount how he came to find an abandoned log cabin not far from the Regent's Canal.
Some highlights will include:
The story of Roger Vyner, 17th century explorer and royal draughtsman
The long forgotten medieval past time of otter hunting on Cambridge Heath
The secret wartime history of Corbridge Crescent, used as an interrogation centre for foreign spies
