MEET THE ARTIST: Interview with Interiors Focused Artist Sara Newman

This week we speak to DegreeArt.com artist Sara Newman, who has been represented by the gallery since 2010. Sara also acts as an interior art and design consultant for the company. Sara's work includes miniature picture scenes and hand etched glass, she tells us about her inspirations, practice and ambitions.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential to your practice?

The artwork in graphic novels* and also visiting model villages when I was growing up.

*A graphic novel is a book made up of comics content. 

 

2) Where do you go to make your best art and when?

It is usually listening to music and working at the layout table in my conservatory.  

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?     

Layered.

 

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?

I have many influences but among the top 10 are my uncle Duggie Fields* for his sharp style and Georgia O'Keeffe for her colours and form.

*Duggie Fields born Tidworth, Wiltshire, 1945 is a British artist, resident in London, in the Earls Court.

5) If you were not an artist, what would you do?         

I do a lot of cool dancing in my mind so maybe a dancer.

 

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?

A massive range of music from classical to present day.

 

7) If money was no object, which 3 artists' work would you collect?

Barbara Hepworth, Georgia O'Keeffe, fashion items by Alexander McQueen.

 

8) If your dream museum, or collection owner came calling, which would it be?

At the moment The Beaney in Canterbury would be lovely.

 

9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art, or creative degree today?   

Follow your instincts.  Go where the great teachers are, not an institution just for its name.

10) What is your favorite book of all time?         

The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera is one of my favourites.

11) If you could place your art in one non-traditional art setting, where would that be?

On Stage!

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course, or time studying taught you?

Don't deviate from the point.

 

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?

The MOMA!
