MEET THE ARTIST: Naomi Vona

Naomi Vona works with vintage and found images creating handmade collages and considers herself to be a well intentioned “photo and video archival parasite”. She draws portals on old photos, postcards and vinyl cover believing that they somehow they can allow us to travel in time and space.

1) Which art movement do you consider most influential on your practice?
Although I don't have a specific art movement in my mind, I believe that Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop Art influenced my last art projects.

2) Where do you go and when to make your best art?
Nowhere, my home is the best place to create for now.

3) How do you describe your 'creative process'?
I use to follow the creative flow in a very random way, without picking a specific image to work on. I don't think too much before and during the process of creating a collage. After I complete my creative task, I just see that my mind was able to release a deep concept, and I can focus more on what I have done.

4) Which artist, living or deceased, is the greatest inspiration to you?
Wassily Kandinsky, Andy Warhol, René Magritte, Marcel Duchamp and so much more. The list could last forever.

5) If you weren't an artist, what would you do?
A detective or a failed musician.

6) What do you listen to for inspiration?
I listen to good music, I don't limit myself to a particular genre. Music is very important, but I prefer silence while I create. I often quote music lyrics, songs of music bands/singers in the title of my pieces.

7) If you could own one artwork, and money was no object, which piece would you acquire?
Joan Miró
Painting
1927

8) If your dream museum or collection owner came calling, which would it be?
Tate Modern

9) What is your key piece of advice for artists embarking on a fine art or creative degree today?
Never stop to learn, practice, have fun and to strongly believe in what you are doing.

10) What is your favourite book of all time (fiction or non-fiction)?
This is really hard. Impossible for me to choose.

11) If you could hang or place your artwork in one non-traditional art setting, where would that be?
An abandoned Victorian house.

12) What was the biggest lesson your university course or time studying taught you?
To always give a meaning and purpose to the things that you do.

13) And finally, if we were to fast forward 10 years, where would we find you?
Into a thrift shop looking for little treasures, or online making the same exact thing. Not really different from what I am doing.
