Bernie Clarkson
As a painter working in oils the starting point of all my paintings are an attraction to a found image from a newspaper, book, magazine or photograph.
My work is a combination of figurative and abstract and is evolving all the time drawing inspiration and influence from historical and contemporary artists. My work often involves placing an anonymous figure or figures in an ambiguous landscape, a landscape which can change dramatically as the painting develops. The over-riding central theme of my work places the figure(s) in a landscape, which is often expressed, as an aesthetic experience of fear where notions of aloneness and isolation can be explored. I use the notion of landscape multitudinously i.e. landscape as an area of land, and landscape as a more abstract concept, as a universal human experience.
