Emily Thomas
Emily Thomas is a British visual artist and woodworker based in Berlin. She is interested in architecture as an indicator of place identity, and explores this through her sculptural work.
Emily analyses the structural form, materiality and colour of buildings to gain insight into the history, society and culture of a particular place. She uses photography to document her observations, and carries out academic and social research to inform, contextualise, and confirm her impressions. Taking into account her practical and theoretical research, Emily selects the most informative photographs to create collages and inspire drawings. This allows her to further study the images and develop conceptual ideas that provide the inspiration for structural designs that are representative of a particular place.
Emily’s finished artworks sit somewhere between sculpture, painting, object and architecture. They encourage the viewer to question social, cultural and political issues, their influences on architecture and its impact on society today.
Emily was born in a small village in Somerset (UK) and became fascinated by the city when she moved to London in 2014. After completing her Foundation Diploma at Camberwell College of Arts, Emily began her Fine Art degree at Chelsea College of Arts and graduated in 2018. Since then, she has been selected for artist residencies in Berlin, Barcelona and Taiwan, which have culminated in significant exhibitions. She has been supported by the Arts Council England and the European Cultural Foundation and has recently been nominated for the European Artist Award, and International André Evard Award. Other career highlights include exhibitions at La peau de l’ours (Brussels) and Oxo Tower Wharf (London).
