Hand Blown Glass
My work inevitable starts in the hot glass workshop, using blown glass techniques, I aim to build up layers of glass with each gather, enabling me to create a depth and thickness to the glass that is then utilized in the polishing stages to expose the optical qualities of light, refraction and reflection.
The pieces are usually built up in 6 or 7 layers depending on the scale of the pieces, starting with a pieces of coloured glass, I will then take a couple of gathers of this colour before picking up the cane details. The cane is made using coloured glass, often overlaying a transparent over a white to create fine tones within these details. The cane is then melted in the hot glass before taking a further 2 or 3 gathers of clear glass. Once the preparation has been completed, the pieces are blown into their intended shapes, often leaving a thickness of glass to be exposed in the polishing process.
Once cool, the pieces are taken through 7 stages of cutting and grinding before being textured, sand blasted and given their final polish.
