My sculptures draw inspiration from the vibrant West Coast architectural style known as “Googie,” along with the dynamic energy of California’s surf culture and the natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean. This distinct style of Mid-Century Modern architecture gained attention in 1949 when architect John Lautner designed the coffee shop "Googies" in West Hollywood, featuring bold, futuristic elements. Googie architecture became synonymous with the optimism of the 1950s and ‘60s, with upswept roofs, striking geometric forms, and dramatic materials like glass, steel, and neon. In my work, I blend these architectural characteristics with the fluidity of waves and the movement of surfing. The ocean’s curves and rhythmic patterns mirror the exaggerated forms of Googie design, while the energy of surf culture aligns with its bold, free-spirited character. Together, these influences allow me to capture the essence of the California coast—its architecture, landscapes, and iconic surf culture—creating sculptures that embody a fusion of man-made innovation and natural beauty.
