Emily Macinnes

Nottingham Trent University (BA Honors Photography , 2013)

I am a Scottish portrait and documentary photographer currently based between Nottingham and Glasgow. Having recently graduated from a BA Honors in Photography at Nottingham Trent University I am now working as a freelance photographer, specializing in portraiture as well as moving image as methods for visual storytelling.

Much of my recent work is concerned with refugees and the issues that surround displacement after having spent time living and working in Deheisha refugee camp in the West Bank. My current project 'Seeds' is a part of an ongoing body of work looking at the situation of Kurdish refugees and their hope in a more positive future.

I have always been interested in the process of photography - the flat-rendering of a multi-dimensional reality - which has led me to explore a more tactile and conceptual approach to my recent documentary practice. The realisation that instead of 'taking' photographs, I am in fact 'making' photographs has led me to approach documentary in a more creative way. My work has become less like visual facts and more like visual poetry - communicating, instead, a kind of metaphorical truth.
